Hail damage on a roof is difficult to detect unless you are trained to spot it. When a hail stone hits your roof, it leaves a small impact mark on the shingles. What you can't see, is the damage caused on the underside of the shingles. Due to the impact, it breaks the back side of the shingle. A good comparison is a bullet hitting a target. A bullet has a small entry hole, and then blows open the back of the object it has hit. Unfortunately with shingles, they are glued together, and you can't see the back side of them. Over the course of 3-4 years, the stone granules will wash off the shingles exposing the full spectrum of the hail damage. The bare spots on the shingles in addition to the underside of the shingles being cracked will cause the shingles to lose their structural integrity and allow moisture to penetrate the roof. A leaking roof can quickly lead to mold growth in your attic, collapsed ceiling, and damaged floors & furniture. By this time it's too late to file an insurance claim for hail damage. You as the homeowner will be entirely responsible to cover the cost of replacing your roof.
